Ten Kitchen Design Trends for 2024

Dec 16, 2023 | Home Design

Are you thinking about your home’s next upgrade? In this blog post, we’ll focus on the heart of your home – the kitchen! As we kick off 2024, the world of kitchen design is brimming with innovative ideas and evolving trends. Whether you’re ready for a full-scale kitchen remodel or just some enhancements that will improve functionality and elevate aesthetics, we’ve got you covered. With some help from designers and insights from the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), we look at ten kitchen design trends for 2024.

The NKBA surveys designers annually to explore styles, colors, products, materials, and finishes, unveiling what’s expected to trend in the next three years. Based on input from 630 industry professionals across North America, the report offers a guide to the exciting changes coming to kitchen aesthetics.

Here are ten key findings in kitchen design trends for 2024:

  1. Island Impact: Open floor plans are still a hit, with around half of the surveyed designers noting an increase in clients embracing eat-in kitchens with spacious islands. Islands aren’t just functional; they are a design focal point in kitchens. There’s also less focus on “bar-style” and more “conversational islands.” Conversational islands offer opportunities for face-to-face seating, often including space for seating on one or both ends of the island.
  2.  Beverage Bliss: Dedicated beverage areas within kitchens are set to be a hit, with nearly 60% of respondents recognizing the trend for wine, coffee, or smoothie enthusiasts. Beverage stations can have special appliances like wine refrigerators or fridge drawers, expresso machines, smoothie makers, and ice makers.
  3. Wood’s Comeback: White cabinetry has had its day, with warm natural wood cabinetry making a stylish comeback. Wood cabinets were noted by 28% of respondents, surpassing white at 26%.
  4. Nature’s Hues: Nature-inspired colors are having a moment, with green tones – taking the lead at 32%. On the other end of the color spectrum, pink, peach, coral, and salmon received the lowest number of responses at 3%.
  5. Gilded Faucets: Gold is the predicted star for kitchen faucets and hardware in the next three years, according to 49.5% of respondents. Matte, brushed, and satin finishes are set to dominate. Matte black took second place behind gold on the survey.
  6. Lighting Layers: Expect multifaceted lighting in kitchens, featuring ambient, statement, and nighttime lighting to set the mood and offer practicality.
  7. Embrace the Quiet: The kitchen is becoming a quieter space, with designers opting for ultra-quiet dishwashers and trash receptacles. Soft push-to-open cabinet technology remains in vogue.
  8. Clever Storage: Over 50% of designers are looking for walk-in, butler, and built-in pantries. Customizable drawer dividers and partitions are on homeowners’ wish lists to help us stay organized. Clever storage lends itself to a more minimalistic design that is clutter-free.
  9. Nutritious Kitchens: With a growing focus on nutrition, homeowners seek more refrigeration space and appliances with integrated cooking functions to accommodate healthier lifestyles.
  10. Easy Cleaning: Streamlining kitchen maintenance takes center stage as homeowners prioritize easy cleaning and effortless upkeep. Survey responses indicate simplified cleaning routines, especially regarding floors, are a priority, favoring designs with minimal or no grout lines. Over the next three years, designers anticipate a surge in the popularity of flooring materials like luxury vinyl, followed closely by engineered wood, hardwood, and ceramic and porcelain tile. The demand for easy-to-clean countertops is also rising, favoring materials like Quartz for its heat tolerance and stain resistance. Integrated induction cooktops on these surfaces will become increasingly common, contributing to a polished and coordinated aesthetic. Expect countertops to extend into the backsplash, enhancing the overall design flow and making it super easy to clean.

Survey results show that kitchens are set to adopt minimalistic designs in the coming years, emphasizing clutter-free spaces that are easy to maintain. This shift towards simplicity extends to various kitchen elements, from cabinets to countertops and flooring. A notable emerging theme in kitchen design trends is the increased emphasis on sustainability, fostering a connection to the outdoors, and creating harmonious kitchen spaces. These ten kitchen design trends for 2024 align seamlessly with a sense of nature and tranquility, promising spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious.
