Larry Mellott, Owner of Start-Living Homes, was recently awarded the 2023 Mack Smith Award from the York Builders Association (YBA). This award is part of the PEAK Achievement Awards, presented annually by YBA. The Mack Smith Award recognizes an individual’s commitment to the goals and objectives of the Association and their contribution to the Association, the profession, and their community.
The PEAK Achievement Awards recognize excellence in all aspects of the building industry, from building and remodeling to community service, outdoor projects, and designs. Mellott and other award winners were honored last month at the 2023 PEAK Achievement Awards Banquet at the Out Door Country Club in York, PA.
Mellott owns Start-Living Homes and is a long-time member of the York Builders Association. After graduating from Dover Area High School, Larry’s career history includes the PA Air National Guard, working as a draftsman at a local manufacturer, designing homes for a local realtor and builder, and drafting home plans for a custom home builder. Through his range of experience, Larry learned all aspects of the residential building industry and, ultimately, launched his own company – Start-Living Homes. He also sold real estate and served on two local township planning commissions.
Mellott has been invested in service to the building industry for decades. He has been a YBA member since 1985, participating on various committees and supporting many community service projects. He served as YBA president in 2008. Larry is also involved in the state and national residential building industry, including director roles with the Pennsylvania Builders Association and the National Association of Home Builders. In 2017, he was appointed to hold the Remodeler’s seat on the Uniform Construction Code (UCC) Review and Advisory Council (RAC) and was recognized as PBA Life Director in 2018.
Larry has traveled all over the world on construction mission trips through his church, and he’s also written and published five novels.
The Mack Smith Award is named after charter member Mack Smith, who exemplifies leadership, community service, respect, dedication to the industry, mentorship, professionalism, and compassion. Individuals can be nominated each year by their peers and selected by a committee of building industry professionals.
